How to Redeem a Google Play Gift Card and Use the Balance on Games
To redeem a Google Play gift card on an Android phone, open the Google Play app, tap your profile picture at the top right, then tap Payments & subscriptions and Redeem code. How to Redeem a Google Play Gift Card on Android
Google’s gift card redemption guide says redeem codes are usually 16 characters mixing letters and numbers. Digital codes sent by email, SMS or an invoice page may differ in length.
- Open the Google Play app on your Android phone.
- Tap your profile picture at the top right.
- Tap Payments & subscriptions, then Redeem code.
- Type the code without spaces or hyphens.
- Tap Redeem, check which Google account will get the balance, then tap Confirm.
For a physical card with a hard to read code, use Scan gift card in the same menu.

Go to play.google.com/redeem, enter the code, click Redeem, review the receiving account and click Confirm.

Open the Google Play app, tap the profile icon, then go to Payments & subscriptions, Payment methods, Google Play balance. Missing balance? Check that you are signed in to the account you redeemed with.
How to Use Google Play Balance for In-Game Top Ups
Google lists virtual currency as an example of an in-app purchase, so diamonds, CP or tokens from a game’s own shop on Android count. Google Play Help describes the flow:
- Open the in-game shop and pick the item.
- Start checkout.
- Tap the current payment method and choose Google Play balance.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.

Two things to know before you pick a card value:
- Balance lower than the item price. Google Play Help says balance can be combined with another payment method, with limitations, while the Indonesian gift card terms say an order exceeding the gift card balance will be declined. Pick a card value that covers the full price.
- Balance only works on Google Play. Google states that Google Play gift cards can only be used for purchases on Google Play. Top up sites that ask for your User ID use their own payment methods. Anyone asking for a Google Play code to pay for something outside Google Play is, per Google, a scam sign.

Changing country also wipes your Google Play Points and level. Members of a Google family group cannot change their Google Play country at all.

So an Indonesian card will not work on a Malaysian, Singaporean or Philippine Google Play account. Players there can pay for in-game currency with local methods in Google Play, or top up directly with their game ID. Anyone asking for a gift card code should be treated as suspicious. If you have already been scammed, report it to the police and then to Google. Lost or stolen cards cannot be replaced because their value cannot be transferred.
